Day of Prayer & Penance for Life and Novena (Jan. 21–29)

On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court legalized abortion throughout the United States in its companion decisions Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton. Since that time, millions of children have lost their lives and millions of women and families have been wounded by abortion. The Church designates January 22 as a “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children.” As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or almsgiving.

The USCCB sponsors a nationwide novena called “9 Days for Life,” which surrounds the liturgical observance of the Day of Prayer. In 2020, the novena will take place January 21 – 29, 2020. Join thousands of Catholics nationwide praying the annual novena, January 21-29. Sign up today at www.9daysforlife.com.

Prayer of Reparation for Roe vs. Wade

God and Father of Life,
You have created every human person,
and have opened the way for each to have eternal life.

We live in the shadow of death.
Tens of millions of your children have been killed
due to the Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion.

Father, have mercy on us.
Heal our land
and accept our offering of prayer and penance.
In your love for us,
turn back the scourge of abortion.

May each of us exult in hearts full of hope
and hands full of mercy
and work together to build a culture of life.

We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”  (Jeremiah 1:5)
